Let's make this simple: Steve Krenz's Learn and Master Guitar was the clear winner of our tests. But of all other programs, Jamorama provides a very good second-best choice for low-budget buyers.

Jamorama combines the virtues of extensive and well-researched books, video lessons, Jam Tracks and audio files with the flexibility and fun provided by software, and we found it extremely efficient. Although not as complete and user friendly as Learn and Master Guitar, its combination of high quality teaching with a low price easily wins over all other competition we tested.

Jamorama is composed of several eBooks and software items. The next few paragraphs provide our assessment of the program's components

The two eBooks and the audio files are first rate, and cover every thinkable aspect of guitar playing. The beginner's book teaches you the basic skills very quickly, and you can start playing the guitar in almost no time. From there on, the lessons bring your level up to intermediate and advanced levels. As with other products by this group (e.g. Singorama) the books are clear to read, fully illustrated, very well structured, fun to follow and provide excellent tutoring. They not only state what to do, but also the mistakes you should avoid doing. The books and audio files teach you practically all aspects of playing the guitar (e.g. picking with a pick and finger picking, percussive strum and staccato strum, deadening and palm muting, bending, sliding, hammer-ons and pull-offs, etc.), and except for Learn and Master Guitar no other course we tested was as comprehensive.
The video lessons are excellent. They enable you to see "live" and in action what should be done - and what should not. They provide step-by-step demonstrations of what the eBooks and audio files teach you - and more. Our experts consider videos a must have for courses of this type, and it's a pity that almost no other course provides them: after all, it's pretty difficult to learn how to "slide" from just text and a still pic. However, these lessons differ significantly from Learn and Master Guitar's video lessons. While Learn and Master Guitar uses videos as the backbone of the course, using them for most of the teaching, Jamorama uses videos as examples to accompany the eBooks and audio files.
The jam tracks are first rate. The tracks can be listened to with the lead guitar track turned on or off (although you cannot control their speed as you can in Learn and master Guitar's tracks). This enables you to progress gradually from following and imitating the lead guitarist (guitar track turned on), to playing lead guitar by yourself (guitar track turned off), even ad-libbing with the bass and drums backing you up. Probably the nicest part comes after you master the skills, turn the guitar track on again and try to outplay the lead guitarists. Our testers stated that the jam tracks were extremely fun, and really appreciated both the tracks' execution and the lead guitarist's skills.
The course provides thousands of lines of guitar tablature (tabs) that enable you to play many popular songs easily. As guitar tabs may be found free on Google, we wouldn't pay for the tabs on their own. However, the tabs provided are of excellent quality, introduce a large and well-sorted selection of songs to play, and are thus a good addition to this course.
GuitearIt is a fun game that we found very effective - at least for those of us with a less than perfect ear, (professionals are usually beyond using this one). While attracted to play again and again, we consistently improved our musical ear. In only a few days, most testers were able to recognize almost every chord played. Very effective and very important for enabling you to play songs you hear on the radio "by ear".
Jayde Musica Pro is another game, designed to teach you how to read sheet music. Sticking to Jamorama's high level of execution, this game too is both fun and effective.
The Guitar Tuner Pro guitar tuning software and the How to Tune your Guitar eBook are two additional touches that make Jamorama such a complete package. The eBook teaches you the theory and practice of how to tune guitars and includes various tips and tricks we could not find elsewhere. The software prompts you to choose your type of guitar, displays the string arrangement on screen, and then enables you to hear exactly what each string should sound like. A great idea, flawlessly executed.
The Jamorama Metronome software is not something we would pay money for, as you can find similar items as freeware on Google. However, it is nicely executed, and it's another nice touch bundling it with Jamorama as a free bonus.
The Advanced Learning Techniques for Guitar eBook is an interesting read. Although our testers did not cut the learning time in half using this book, as the ad-hype promised, they did find a very noticeable improvement in both learning time and in the quality of learning to play songs.
Jamorama enables lifetime updates. As the course is constantly enlarged and improved, this means that even if new features, videos and eBooks are added and the price of the course is raised after you buy - you can get all the additional extras for free. This has happened before.
